My Project
Background
This fall camp was the beginning of my fifth year with Southern Utah's football program (2 as a player and 3 as an assistant coach. When I made the final decision to use our fall camp as my EDGE project, we were actually already in the middle of camp but with the amount of time and work that we put in during a regular day, I had no worries about actually being able to complete my project.
Project
A normal day during camp started like this. At seven in the morning, both offense and defense would have a meeting where we would talk about what the players could expense that day's practice. During the first two weeks, this meeting consisted of a lot of what we called installs. These were when we would teach our players new coverage's, blitzes, etc. This meeting usually lasted about 45 minutes.

After that early morning meeting, we would have breakfast then everybody would make their way over to Eccles Coliseum to get ready for practice. Practice would go from 9:30 am to 11:30 am. A typical practice during fall camp starts a quick special teams period followed by a warm up. Depending on the dress for the day (Helmets only, pads and shorts, or full pads), we would either have a period of crossover with the offense and the defense or we would simply have a longer fundamental period. After fundamentals, skill players would get together and have 7 on 7's or 1 on 1 while the lineman would get together for their own 1 on 1. We would have more 11 vs 11 crossover as well as practice our special teams. My job during practice was to help coach the interior defensive line, film offensive line/defensive line 1 on 1, and script our defensive calls during the crossover periods.

After practice ended, everyone would head back to campus for lunch and the players would then have a break. The coaches would then get together as an offense or defense and watch that mornings practice. My job during this meeting was to enter in the calls from practice into Hudl (the video service that we use for film), and help make corrections for certain periods of practice.

At 3:45, the players would return to campus and we would watch that morning's practice together. Depending on the day, that meeting would either end at 5 pm or 5:45. On days when we finished our meeting at 5:45, we would go to dinner after meetings then go to a team meeting that would last about 30 minutes. When we had a shorter meeting, we would have a special teams meeting before dinner which would then end the day for the players.

Once the players were excused for the day, the coaching staff would have a meeting where we would discuss any issues that may have come up during practice as well as the following days practice. My job here was to prepare a practice schedule for the defense while we discussed what the entire team would do during practice.

Once we began preparing for our first opponent, our schedule changed to reflect one that we would use once school started. We had shorter practices and shorter meeting times both to account for classes, as well as NCAA regulations. In this time, we also began preparing scouting reports for our players so they could have a better idea of what the team they would be facing was like.
